How to Make Traditional Greek Salad

Greek salad is one of the most famous salads out there. Its classical ingredients are fresh tomato, cucumbers, capers, onion, feta cheese, many olives and at least two or three spoonfuls of olive oil. In some areas, it is served on top of a scoop of Greek potato salad. Don't forget a side helping of fresh bread!

Ingredients

  • 150 grams feta cheese, cubed
  • 4 tomatoes cut in wedges
  • 1 cucumber unpeeled, cut in rounds
  • 1 large onion, cut in fine wedges
  • 2 teaspoons capers
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 15 to 20 black olives
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil

Steps

  1. Take a large open serving bowl, mix tomatoes, cucumber, onion (red onion normally), feta cheese as prepared.
  2. Add olives and capers (optional).
  3. Sprinkle with oregano.
  4. Drizzle plenty of olive oil and mix it in with the salad, so as not to make it too dry!

Tips

  • Keep ingredients cold until ready for use.
  • Ground black pepper can be used in place of oregano.
  • There are a few alternative Greek salads, the Countryhouse for example, where beetroot might also be included. But this is for the simple, best known traditional Greek salad.
  • Should you accidentally add too much olive oil, don't fret. This can be soaked up with some loaf bread, along with the tomato juice. Which is scrumptious, so enjoy!
  • Feta cheese is quite salty, so you may not need to add any salt at all.
  • It is important to toss the salad well. If the salad is not tossed enough, the olive oil tends to gather and the bottom, resulting in an unevenly-flavored salad.

Warnings

  • Take care when grating or chopping; it's easier to be proud of your creation if you don't end up in the hospital because of it.
  • Exercise good food hygiene.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean chopping board
  • Mixing bowl/serving bowl
  • A knife(sharp)

  • Add some veggies that you like! Wash and chop up a few to throw in with the salad. Try to mix interesting flavors, such as tomatoes, celery, and herbs (fresh is best).
  • Go even further with some meat. If you want a salad with some extra protein, add some chopped pieces of turkey lunch meat or other meats.

How to Make a Fruit Salad

    How to Make Fruit Salad

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Want the perfect dessert that you'll love without tipping the scales and can make in under ten minutes? Try a fruit salad!

    Steps

    1. Remember that fruit salads are often creative -- you decide which fruits to use and how much. Some tastyfruits are berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries,) apples, bananas, cantaloupe, grapes, honeydew melons, grapefruits, kiwis, mangoes, nectarines, oranges, and peaches.
    2. Wash all your fruits.
    3. Put all grapes and berries (except strawberries) in a large mixing bowl.
    4. Chop all other fruits into bite-size pieces. For reference, each piece should be a little bigger than your thumbnail.
    5. Arrange them on a platter, put into individual bowls or Tupperware, or serve out of the bowl (coat the bowl with lemon juice to naturally sweeten the fruit-this will retard any browning [oxidizing] as well due to the citric acid and ascorbic acid - FruitFresh or crushed Vitamin C tablets will do the same thing).
    6. Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled. Enjoy!

    Tips

    • For a treat, serve over ice cream or add some whipped cream.
    • Try adding in a little bit of maple syrup- it's delicious!
    • Not sure which fruits will taste good together? Don't worry! Throw in a few fruits and it'll taste great. As a general guide, berries taste good with everything, strawberries and kiwis are a common pair, and Mandarin oranges add flavor to anything.
    • If you happen to use watermelon, make it into a bowl to hold the salad - cut it lengthwise a couple of inches off-center, use a melon baller to scoop out the edible part, and then later put the finished salad into the hollowed-out melon. Use the other piece as a lid, if you like.
    • To make a cocktail style fruit salad, add between 1 and 2 cups of good quality orange juice, and between 3 tablespoons and 1/3 cup of sugar, all depending on the amount you are preparing.
    • Bananas turn brown quickly. If you expect to have leftovers, cut up the bananas and coat them lightly with lemon juice before mixing with the rest.
    • If you are using apples, try to use lime juice, or keep the salad refrigerated to prevent the apples from turning brown.

    Warnings

    • Be careful when chopping fruits- knives are sharp and when mishandled can be dangerous. Sharper knives are actually safer. The sharper your knife, the less likely it is to slip and cut you!
    • Beware of the food allergies of your guests.
    • It's advisable that you wash your fruits thoroughly before preparing your salad, to remove any traces of pesticides.

    Things You'll Need

    • Diverse fruit (see above list)
    • Knife
    • Large bowl
    • Fruits
